MLA-C01 or MLA-C02? Choose the Exam Before You Choose the Study Plan

If you're preparing for AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate in September 2026, the first choice is the exam version, not the newest course. A candidate ready for English MLA-C01 has a different decision from someone beginning preparation for the updated MLA-C02 beta.

An exam update doesn't erase your learning, but it can change what your next study session needs to cover. The practical starting point is the version, language and appointment you intend to use.

What the published transition says

AWS's July announcement and September update establish the following timeline. This note was checked against those official materials on September 8, 2026; availability of an individual appointment still depends on the booking system. [1][2]

The English deadline is not the same as a retirement date for every language. AWS says Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese MLA-C01 remain available during the beta transition. The September announcement schedules general availability for January 14, 2027, while some certification-page material still describes general availability less specifically. Treat future scheduling information as an announcement to recheck before booking. [2][3]

The beta has its own format: AWS advertises 85 questions, 170 minutes and a $75 USD beta price. Those conditions should not be confused with the 65-question, 130-minute MLA-C01 format. AWS also displays ME1-C02 as a beta booking code in its certification information, alongside the MLA-C02 version name. Confirm the exam name, beta status and language together rather than treating the different label as another syllabus. [1][3]

Which route fits your preparation?

Already ready for an English C01 appointment

A usable C01 appointment before the closing date can remain a sensible route when your preparation matches the C01 guide. A lesson on a new C02 topic may be valuable later, but it shouldn't displace an unresolved weakness in the examination you are actually about to take.

I would not compress an unfinished study plan simply to beat the deadline. The relevant comparison is whether you can prepare and sit the exam with reasonable margin—not whether it is theoretically possible to finish the remaining videos before September 28.

Beginning now or choosing the C02 beta

Use the C02 guide to define the preparation. AWS now lists that guide and a comparison with C01, so the July statement that the guide would be released is no longer the only available reference. [4]

The update includes traditional ML alongside generative AI, foundation models and agentic workflows. The four-domain structure remains, but familiar headings should not be mistaken for unchanged task coverage. A resource that explains conventional model deployment well may still leave gaps in retrieval-augmented generation or agent orchestration. [1][4]

Beta-format information belongs beside the guide when planning the appointment. Do not infer the beta's question count from the general scored and unscored question descriptions in an exam guide.

Keep the knowledge and rebuild only the gaps

A useful comparison starts with what you already understand. Data preparation, deployment, monitoring and security don't become irrelevant because a version changes. The next question is which C02 tasks those explanations actually support.

For each area you plan to study, distinguish direct preparation from background learning and a genuine gap. That small distinction prevents a familiar topic title from counting as complete coverage. It also gives each new resource a purpose: repair a weakness, extend an existing concept or rehearse applying it in an unfamiliar case.

A high score on C01 practice material can tell you something about C01 preparation. It cannot demonstrate complete C02 readiness. Conversely, choosing the beta does not require throwing away notes that still explain the shared foundations accurately.

The decision is easier once it has a concrete target. Keep the intended version, language, date and matching guide together; reconsider them when an appointment or official requirement changes. Then return to studying the material that serves that choice rather than rebuilding the plan whenever another course appears.
