One outcome, several teams, too many copies of status

The delivery teams update their issues. A program manager copies the progress into another project. An executive report gets a separate summary. By the end of the week, three records describe the same work and none agrees completely with the others.

These tests explore how a GitLab planning model can avoid that problem. The questions connect the information teams need to act with the information leaders need to coordinate. Rather than choosing an object because it looks large enough, you practice asking what it should own and which decision it should support.

Give each planning mechanism a clear purpose

Issues and work-item metadata carry actionable work, ownership, and relationships. Epics and hierarchy connect that work to broader outcomes. Boards and filters support flow; iterations and milestones give the work a useful planning or release rhythm.

Roadmaps and reporting bring sequence, dependencies, and portfolio visibility into view. Their value depends on the information beneath them. A roadmap cannot repair an unowned dependency, and an average completion percentage cannot show whether the one required integration is still blocked.

The explanations help you compare planning choices through their consequences. Can a team update its work once? Can someone identify the next decision without opening every issue? Does the structure preserve who owns the fact? Those are better tests of a planning model than the number of objects it contains.

Name the audience before choosing the object

When an answer is unclear, write the outcome, the owner, the planning horizon, and the next decision. Then ask what each proposed object would contribute. Sketch the relationship between an initiative, its work, and its controlling dependency. If the sketch requires the same fact to be maintained in several places, examine why. Return to a fresh scenario after resolving that part of the model.
